CARB Toroidal Roller Bearings Overview
CARB is a toroidal roller bearing with a distinctive internal geometry that combines the self-aligning capability of a spherical roller bearing with the axial displacement capability of a cylindrical roller bearing. It also provides high radial load capacity in a relatively compact cross section.
Unlike conventional self-aligning bearings, axial displacement is not governed only by radial clearance. The curved raceways and toroidal rollers permit simultaneous angular adjustment and axial movement, giving CARB a wider usable working zone for non-locating bearing positions.
Self-Alignment and Axial Displacement
CARB compensates for angular misalignment caused by shaft deflection or housing-seat errors while allowing thermal expansion and other axial movement inside the bearing. This dual capability helps reduce internal stress and avoids unnecessary axial restraint in long-shaft systems.

Compact High-Capacity Working Zone
The toroidal rollers and raceways maintain efficient radial contact over a broad range of alignment and axial positions. At an axial displacement equal to about 8% of bearing width, the risk of creating radial preload is lower than in a spherical roller bearing with C4 clearance; even larger displacement may be acceptable depending on operating clearance.
